comprehending :: making & repairing meaning ::

word-level

"Good comprehension also depends on an extensive vocabulary, for above-word-level comprehension cannot occur if individual words are not understood." (Pressley, M., 2002, After reading, para. 3)

Working Definition

Making and repairing meaning at the word level is about either knowing the meaning of a word or utilizing appropriate strategies. Having the word as a sight word or the ability to decode the word is typically a precursor to navigating word level complexity. Some of the strategies that readers utilize to make meaning at the word level are vocabulary (familiarity), semantics (context), and morphemic analysis (morphology & etymology).
