derivative

"Although summarizing, paraphrasing, and retelling are related, they are somewhat different in process, form, and product." (Kissner, E., 2006, p. 15)

Working Definition

While derivative forms of sharing thinking do require generative cognition, the main thrust is derived from the text itself. This is still a form of higher-order cognition as it requires varying degrees of recoding an author's thinking. In other words, the reader must put the author's words in other words.
