text to self

Working Definition

A reflective text to self connection is a personal connection that occurs when the text causes the reader to form an association between the text and actual experience. In other words, the text reminds them of something about themselves. If while reading a text about a dog the reader makes the connection that they also have a dog, this would be a text to self connection. This example of text to self connection is somewhat egocentric, and if not expanded upon, of limited use as a strategy for comprehending. Extending this reflective text to self connection into a projective self to text connection by considering how the reader's dog would react to the circumstances of the story, and then drawing predictive inferences about what could happen next in the story, would increase the effectiveness of connections as a strategy for comprehending.
