forward inference

"These inference types can be further subdivided, into those which occur in a backwards direction relative to the progression of narrative time (connecting, explanatory inferences), and those which occur in a forwards direction (predictive inferences)" (Smith, E., & Hancox, P. 2001, p. 311) 

Working Definition

Forward inferring is synonomous with predicting. It is the act of the reader developing implied understandings about what will occur latter in the text.
